A system that was once reliant on mechanical controls and timing is now one that primarily employs electronic control units (ECUs) and high-pressure common-rail fuel injection to optimise fuel combustion and enhance efficiency.
Electronic Fuel Injection, EFI, also known as Electronic Diesel Control (EDC), was introduced to diesel engines in the 1990s to improve engine efficiency, performance and to reduce pollutant emissions. This system is controlled by a computer called the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which monitors the engine's inputs and outputs continuously to calculate and determine the most efficient fuel/air mix for combustion.
The EFI system involves injecting fuel into the engine's cylinders using an injector or set of injectors, while earlier diesel engines employed indirect fuel injection. The advent of direct injection engines was pivotal to diesel technology because it permits greater control over fuel injection, leading to improved fuel efficiency and performance.
In direct injection systems, the injectors spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber, while indirect injection systems release the fuel into a pre-chamber. These systems enhance the overall engine performance by ensuring a smoother idle and enhanced throttle response.
The primary types of EFI used in diesel engines are common rail direct injection (CRDI) and electronic unit injector (EUI). Both systems operate using a high-pressure pump and injectors, but their way of delivering fuel into the engine differs slightly.
In the common rail system, the high-pressure pump pressurises the fuel and sends it to a common rail that feeds all the injectors, while in the electronic unit injector system, each injector has its pressure pump integrated.
An innovative addition to diesel technology is the 'drive by wire' concept, where electronic signals replace mechanical linkages. This enhances vehicle responsiveness and control, furthering fuel efficiency.
